GAF vs CertainTeed — Which Roofing System Is Right For You?
GAF and CertainTeed are the two most trusted names in residential roofing — and Blue Truss is certified by both. Most contractors install one or the other. We install both, which means we can give you an honest comparison without a financial reason to favor either when planning your roof replacement in The Woodlands. Here is what you need to know.
Get A Free Estimate Call 281-766-8524Both GAF and CertainTeed are excellent roofing systems — the difference between them is less significant than the difference between a properly installed system and a poorly installed one. CertainTeed is Blue Truss’s primary system and our most common recommendation for Woodlands homeowners. GAF is our secondary system and an excellent option where product availability, specific shingle profiles, or homeowner preference makes it the better fit. The most important factor is not which brand you choose — it is whether your contractor is certified to install it properly.
CertainTeed
- Highest certification: ShingleMaster Premier — top 1% nationally
- Top warranty: SureStart PLUS 5-STAR — up to lifetime workmanship
- Flagship product: Landmark Pro architectural shingle
- Premium line: Grand Manor, Carriage House designer shingles
- Full system: CertainTeed Integrity Roof System
- Installer requirement: 75%+ of crew must be Master Craftsman certified

GAF
- Highest certification: Master Elite — top 2% nationally, invitation only
- Top warranty: Golden Pledge — 50-year non-prorated materials, 30-year workmanship
- Flagship product: Timberline HDZ — America’s best-selling shingle
- Premium line: Camelot, Grand Sequoia designer shingles
- Full system: GAF Lifetime Roofing System
- Installer requirement: Verified installation standards
- Third-party inspection: Required for Golden Pledge warranty
Both manufacturers offer tiered warranty systems. The top warranty tier for each is only available through their highest-certified contractors — which is why certification matters. For a deeper look at shingle tiers and how they affect performance, see our guide to builder-grade vs premium shingles:
CertainTeed SureStart PLUS 5-STAR Warranty
The highest warranty CertainTeed offers. Includes up to lifetime workmanship coverage on qualifying systems, 50-year non-prorated material coverage, and wind and algae warranty. The lifetime workmanship option is only available through ShingleMaster Premier certified contractors — see the CertainTeed ShingleMaster Premier products we install.
GAF Golden Pledge Warranty
GAF’s highest warranty tier. Includes 50-year non-prorated material coverage and up to 30-year workmanship coverage. The Golden Pledge requires a third-party inspection of the completed installation before it is issued — making it one of the most verified warranties in residential roofing. Only available through GAF Master Elite contractors.
Neither manufacturer’s top warranty is available through standard contractors. You must work with a ShingleMaster Premier contractor for CertainTeed’s top tier, and a Master Elite contractor for GAF’s top tier. Blue Truss holds both certifications — which means both warranty tiers are available to every homeowner we serve.

Entry Architectural Shingle
CertainTeed Landmark vs. GAF Timberline HDZ. Both are premium architectural shingles — GAF Timberline HDZ is America’s best-selling shingle. CertainTeed Landmark has a slightly different profile. Both perform comparably in Texas conditions. Color availability varies.
Premium Architectural Shingle
CertainTeed Landmark Pro vs. GAF Timberline UHDZ. Both offer enhanced thickness, improved impact resistance, and stronger wind ratings. Blue Truss recommends premium architectural as the standard choice for Woodlands homeowners — the performance upgrade over entry-level is meaningful in Texas conditions.
Designer / Premium Shingle
CertainTeed Grand Manor vs. GAF Camelot. Both mimic the appearance of slate or wood shake. CertainTeed Grand Manor is one of the heaviest and most dimensional asphalt shingles available. Choice often comes down to aesthetic preference and color availability for your specific home.
Impact Resistant Options
Both manufacturers offer Class 4 impact resistant shingle lines. In The Woodlands market — where hail is a regular occurrence — Class 4 shingles are worth considering. Some Texas insurance carriers offer premium discounts for Class 4 rated roofs. Ask us about eligibility at your estimate.
Algae Resistance
Both CertainTeed and GAF offer algae-resistant shingle lines — important in The Woodlands’ humid climate where black streaking is common on older roofs. Both use copper-based granule technology. Blue Truss recommends algae-resistant shingles as standard in this market.
Color Selection
Both manufacturers offer extensive color libraries. Blue Truss brings full sample boards from both systems to every estimate appointment. Color choice is often the deciding factor between the two systems for homeowners who are otherwise indifferent — and we can show you both against your actual home’s exterior.
CertainTeed is our primary system — it is what we install most frequently and what we know most deeply. For most Woodlands homeowners, a CertainTeed Landmark Pro or Grand Manor system installed to ShingleMaster Premier standards is our standard recommendation. CertainTeed and GAF premium lines fall within the same price band in The Woodlands — see the full roof replacement cost breakdown.
GAF is our secondary system and an excellent option in specific situations:
When We Recommend GAF
When a homeowner has a strong preference for Timberline HDZ specifically. When a specific color or profile is only available in the GAF line. When a previous installation on the home used GAF products and matching is a priority. When the Golden Pledge warranty structure is specifically important to the homeowner.
When We Recommend CertainTeed
For most standard residential replacements in The Woodlands. When the lifetime workmanship warranty option is important. When the homeowner wants the broadest product selection. When Grand Manor or designer shingles are the aesthetic goal. When there is no specific reason to choose otherwise.
The brand matters less than you might think. A properly installed CertainTeed system and a properly installed GAF system will both perform excellently in The Woodlands climate and both qualify for industry-leading warranty coverage. The most important decision is choosing a contractor certified to install either system to manufacturer standards — not which logo is on the shingles.

“Both Chris and Jason were very transparent about our roof inspection and replacement. They told us exactly how the work would be done, and the crews did an excellent job of installing our new roof. We now have a quality roof that will last for many years. I recommend them to anyone who is getting their roof repaired or replaced. They did an outstanding job for us.”

We are so grateful we chose Blue Truss to replace our roof!
“We are so grateful we chose Blue Truss to replace our roof. Initially, Jason and Colton came to inspect our roof after we found a leak on our patio. They showed us areas on our roof that needed immediate repair. After walking us through all our options, we decided to replace the roof. From there, Colton explained in detail what needed to be done and showed us pictures of the areas where we would eventually have future problems. They were honest, gave us a fair price, and worked with us from start to finish. Colton kept us updated and was on the job during the replacement. What we like about Blue Truss is they use quality material, did a quality job, and were available to answer any questions. Thank you, Jason and Colton.”

Blue Truss is a very professional company.
Blue Truss is a very professional company who replaced our roof and siding in The Woodlands. Colton Breslawski and Jason Howanec were on site for the projects and kept us informed of the progress. Their pricing was very fair, they showed up on time, and completed the jobs on schedule. We are very thankful they were recommended to us and we will recommend them to anyone who needs a roof or siding. Not only is their work excellent, they are very nice people to work with.
